Madame Frigo:
The faces
behind the trade-mark

Madame Frigo is a non-for-profit organization headquartered in Bern. Our team is committed to both improving awareness of food handling in private households and increasing social interaction in the neighborhood. It is supported by generous volunteers who make the project feasible.

From a small trial
to a nation-wide project

The idea for public fridges commenced in 2014 as part of an Imp!act event by euforia. The concept aimed at private households, with over 45% of the primary causes of food waste in Switzerland. With the motto “Deeds, not words”, we came together as a group of students to set up the first public fridge in Bern. All we needed was a fridge, a locality, and electricity. The Madame Frigo project – previously known as “Bern isst Bern” – caught on quickly: within three years a total of nine fridges were set up.

With the support of Engagement Migros, the sponsorship fund of the Migros Group, our organization expanded its operations across Switzerland under the trade-mark Madame Frigo.

Madame Frigo is managed by Jana Huwyler and Nina Fassbind. Both have been involved from the start and are law students at the University of Bern.
