From a small trial
to a nation-wide project

The idea for public fridges originated in 2014 as part of an Imp!act event by euforia. Under the motto “Action, not words”, four students came together to set up the first public refrigerator in Bern.

The Madame Frigo project caught on quickly from there, and thanks to the support of Engagement Migros, the sponsorship fund of the Migros Group, our organization expanded its operations across Switzerland under the trade-mark Madame Frigo. The concept is aimed at private households where 28% of all food waste in Switzerland originates. All that is needed is a refrigerator, a location and electricity – and we’re ready to go.

Madame Frigo is a non-profit organization with headquartered in Bern. The organization is made up of a nine person project team and is led by co-founder Jana Huwyler. Madame Frigo is supported by strong partners and many great people who volunteer their time to help reduce food waste.
